Let’s find a mattress! Picking out the right mattress can be a difficult task for people. A lot of options can be overwhelming, and without knowing what you need or what is out there it can make things difficult. In this post we are going to look at the different types of mattresses and what the benefits or drawbacks are to them.
Innerspring
Most mattresses today are going to be innerspring support. Generally this is what I would recommend to most reading this, as the springs are able to offer the best support for adult body weights. Additionally, the springs can have zoned supports with upgraded lumbar and edge supports. Opposed to innerspring mattresses would be all foam or latex mattresses. While these can have a comfortable feel, they generally are not the best suited for adult use for an every night use mattress. I’ve also seen throughout the years that innerspring mattresses hold up longer and are more durable. Unless it is for a bunk bed or trundle, I would recommend sticking to a mattress with spring support.
Padding Layers
Now here is the fun part. Mattresses are going to have innerspring supports, and different types of padding layers. It is important to understand the benefits to each type of foam or latex, and to pick which will be best for you.
Foam
This is the most common material that you will see in the bedding industry. Foam can give a nice comfortable feel and has really good affordability.
My suggestion is that if you are looking at a mattress with foams, that you look for higher densities that will be more durable. A lot of companies use cheaper layers of foam that do not hold up very well.
Memory Foam
Memory foam is a very popular foam that is used in mattresses. It is a very soft plush foam that conforms to the body very well. It gives really nice pressure relief off on the joints. This can be a popular option for side sleepers. The downside to memory foam is that while it conforms around you, it can sleep a little warmer than other alternative options. Most people are pretty familiar now with memory foam, so if it a feel that you like I would look for higher weight foam.
Companies will have listed “3 pound memory foam” or “4 pound memory foam”. You should look for the highest weight. A heavier weight will be the most durable.

Talalay Latex
More premium bedding options will offer talalay latex padding layers. Talalay latex is a type of rubber that is made from liquid latex making it into a foam. It gives a nice soft plush feel, while having better breathability and durability than foams. If you are serious about getting yourself the best in the bedding industry, it is here with talalay latex.
Dunlop Latex
Dunlop latex is a fully organic latex that is made from the sap of rubber trees.
This is similar to the talalay, but in dunlop latex it does not get put through any synthetic processes to be made, and is a fully organic product. If you are looking for something as green and organic as possible, then dunlop latex would be the best pick for you. Generally dunlop latex can have a firmer denser feel than foams and talalay latex.
There is a lot that goes into mattresses and it is important to find what is best for you.

The Best Fit For You
It is important to find what works best for you. Researching the different types of padding layers and mattresses can help to find what suits your body type and sleep needs the most to find the mattress that works the best for you.
